So I just learned about Mario González and his wife Delania Yaun.
Delania, who is a white woman, was one of the victims in the Atlanta massage parlor massacre that happened a few days ago. Her husband, Mexican born Mario González, survived the shooting that happened in Atlanta, and when he escaped the building that the shooting took place, the cops kept him handcuffed for TWO HOURS, because THE COPS thought he was the shooter. Automatically brought suspicion on this BROWN MAN.
He was bound while his wife lay dying inside. They wouldn’t even tell him if is wife was dead or alive. Source and article here.
ACAB forever and ever.
Here’s the link to his GoFundMe since Delaina is survived by her two kids, one of whom is an eight-month-old baby.
Also putting on my organizer hat for a second to highlight that this is the very reason we should be wary of calls to increase policing, because the same police who couldn’t admit that the shooter was motivated by white supremacy and the fetishization of Asian women, are the same police who handcuffed a Latino man and left him unaware of his wife’s condition until after she had already died. How can we trust police to hold white supremacists accountable, when they are the instrument of white supremacy itself?
So when you see celebrities and politicians pushing for more hate crime legislation, more policing, and giving police more authority and more resources, please consider the *actual* consequences of those policies, and ask: What are directly impacted communities–the massage parlor workers, sex workers, undocumented folks, and others who actually have to live with these consequences–pushing for? (Hint: it’s not more police.)
Here’s a tweet from Michelle Kim, who sums it up better than I can: “COPS DO NOT KEEP US SAFE. More policing means more danger to Black and brown people, AAPI people, Native people, sex workers, low-wage workers, poor people, queer and trans people, undocumented people, disabled people, and people at multiple intersections of these margins.”
